Esercizi sulla Legge di Hess

Introduzione

  1. \text{C} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2C+O2→CO2\text{C} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2 \Delta H_1 = -393.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH1=−393.5 kJ/mol\Delta H_1 = -393.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}
  2. \text{C} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}C+12O2→CO\text{C} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO} \Delta H_2 = -110.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH2=−110.5 kJ/mol\Delta H_2 = -110.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}
  3. \text{CO} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2CO+12O2→CO2\text{CO} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2 \Delta H_3 = -283.0 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH3=−283.0 kJ/mol\Delta H_3 = -283.0 \, \text{kJ/mol}

Calcola l'entalpia di reazione per la reazione:

\text{C} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO} \rightarrow \text{C} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2
C+12O2→CO→C+O2→CO2\text{C} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO} \rightarrow \text{C} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2

Risposta:
Utilizzando la legge di Hess:

\Delta H = \Delta H_2 + \Delta H_3 = -110.5 \, \text{kJ/mol} + (-283.0 \, \text{kJ/mol}) = -393.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}
ΔH=ΔH2+ΔH3=−110.5 kJ/mol+(−283.0 kJ/mol)=−393.5 kJ/mol\Delta H = \Delta H_2 + \Delta H_3 = -110.5 \, \text{kJ/mol} + (-283.0 \, \text{kJ/mol}) = -393.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}

Esercizio 2: Reazioni inverse

Domanda: Se la reazione \text{A} \rightarrow \text{B}A→B\text{A} \rightarrow \text{B} ha un'entalpia di reazione di \Delta H = +50 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH=+50 kJ/mol\Delta H = +50 \, \text{kJ/mol}, qual è l'entalpia della reazione inversa \text{B} \rightarrow \text{A}B→A\text{B} \rightarrow \text{A}?

Risposta:
Secondo la legge di Hess, l'entalpia della reazione inversa è uguale in valore assoluto ma opposta in segno:

\Delta H = -50 \, \text{kJ/mol}
ΔH=−50 kJ/mol\Delta H = -50 \, \text{kJ/mol}

Esercizio 3: Somma di reazioni

Domanda: Dati i seguenti dati di entalpia:

  1. \text{A} + \text{B} \rightarrow \text{C}A+B→C\text{A} + \text{B} \rightarrow \text{C} \Delta H_1 = -100 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH1=−100 kJ/mol\Delta H_1 = -100 \, \text{kJ/mol}
  2. \text{C} + \text{D} \rightarrow \text{E}C+D→E\text{C} + \text{D} \rightarrow \text{E} \Delta H_2 = -200 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH2=−200 kJ/mol\Delta H_2 = -200 \, \text{kJ/mol}

Calcola l'entalpia della reazione totale:

\text{A} + \text{B} + \text{D} \rightarrow \text{E}
A+B+D→E\text{A} + \text{B} + \text{D} \rightarrow \text{E}

Risposta:
Sommando le entalpie delle reazioni:

\Delta H = \Delta H_1 + \Delta H_2 = -100 \, \text{kJ/mol} + (-200 \, \text{kJ/mol}) = -300 \, \text{kJ/mol}
ΔH=ΔH1+ΔH2=−100 kJ/mol+(−200 kJ/mol)=−300 kJ/mol\Delta H = \Delta H_1 + \Delta H_2 = -100 \, \text{kJ/mol} + (-200 \, \text{kJ/mol}) = -300 \, \text{kJ/mol}

Hess's Law Exercises

Introduction

Hess's law states that the total enthalpy change of a chemical reaction is independent of the reaction path, but depends only on the initial and final states. This means that if a reaction can be expressed as the sum of two or more reactions, the total enthalpy of the reaction is the sum of the enthalpies of the individual reactions.

Exercise 1: Calculating the enthalpy of reaction

Question: Consider the following reactions:

  1. \text{C} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2C+O2→CO2\text{C} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2 \Delta H_1 = -393.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH1=−393.5 kJ/mol\Delta H_1 = -393.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}
  2. \text{C} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}C+12O2→CO\text{C} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO} \Delta H_2 = -110.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH2=−110.5 kJ/mol\Delta H_2 = -110.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}
  3. \text{CO} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2CO+12O2→CO2\text{CO} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2 \Delta H_3 = -283.0 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH3=−283.0 kJ/mol\Delta H_3 = -283.0 \, \text{kJ/mol}

Calculate the enthalpy of reaction for the reaction:

\text{C} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO} \rightarrow \text{C} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2
C+12O2→CO→C+O2→CO2\text{C} + \frac{1}{2} \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO} \rightarrow \text{C} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2

Answer:
Using Hess's law:

\Delta H = \Delta H_2 + \Delta H_3 = -110.5 \, \text{kJ/mol} + (-283.0 \, \text{kJ/mol}) = -393.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}
ΔH=ΔH2+ΔH3=−110.5 kJ/mol+(−283.0 kJ/mol)=−393.5 kJ/mol\Delta H = \Delta H_2 + \Delta H_3 = -110.5 \, \text{kJ/mol} + (-283.0 \, \text{kJ/mol}) = -393.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}

Exercise 2: Reverse Reactions

Question: If reaction \text{A} \rightarrow \text{B}A→B\text{A} \rightarrow \text{B} has a reaction enthalpy of \Delta H = +50 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH=+50 kJ/mol\Delta H = +50 \, \text{kJ/mol}, what is the enthalpy of the reverse reaction \text{B} \rightarrow \text{A}B→A\text{B} \rightarrow \text{A}?

Answer:
According to Hess's law, the enthalpy of the reverse reaction is equal in absolute value but opposite in sign:

\Delta H = -50 \, \text{kJ/mol}
ΔH=−50 kJ/mol\Delta H = -50 \, \text{kJ/mol}

Exercise 3: Adding Reactions

Question: Given the following enthalpy data:

  1. \text{A} + \text{B} \rightarrow \text{C}A+B→C\text{A} + \text{B} \rightarrow \text{C} \Delta H_1 = -100 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH1=−100 kJ/mol\Delta H_1 = -100 \, \text{kJ/mol}
  2. \text{C} + \text{D} \rightarrow \text{E}C+D→E\text{C} + \text{D} \rightarrow \text{E} \Delta H_2 = -200 \, \text{kJ/mol}ΔH2=−200 kJ/mol\Delta H_2 = -200 \, \text{kJ/mol}

Calculate the enthalpy of the total reaction:

\text{A} + \text{B} + \text{D} \rightarrow \text{E}
A+B+D→E\text{A} + \text{B} + \text{D} \rightarrow \text{E}

Answer:
Adding the Reaction enthalpies:

\Delta H = \Delta H_1 + \Delta H_2 = -100 \, \text{kJ/mol} + (-200 \, \text{kJ/mol}) = -300 \, \text{kJ/mol}
ΔH=ΔH1+ΔH2=−100 kJ/mol+(−200 kJ/mol)=−300 kJ/mol\Delta H = \Delta H_1 + \Delta H_2 = -100 \, \text{kJ/mol} + (-200 \, \text{kJ/mol}) = -300 \, \text{kJ/mol}
