d = \frac{m}{V}
d=mVd = \frac{m}{V}

dove:

  • ddd = densità (g/L)
  • mmm = massa (g)
  • VVV = volume (L)

PV = nRT
PV=nRTPV = nRT

dove:

  • PPP = pressione (atm)
  • VVV = volume (L)
  • nnn = numero di moli
  • RRR = costante dei gas (0.0821 L·atm/(K·mol))
  • TTT = temperatura (K)

Soluzione:

  1. Identifica i dati:

    • m = 2 \, \text{g}m=2 gm = 2 \, \text{g}
    • V = 1 \, \text{L}V=1 LV = 1 \, \text{L}
  2. Applica la formula della densità:

    d = \frac{m}{V} = \frac{2 \, \text{g}}{1 \, \text{L}} = 2 \, \text{g/L}
    d=mV=2 g1 L=2 g/Ld = \frac{m}{V} = \frac{2 \, \text{g}}{1 \, \text{L}} = 2 \, \text{g/L}

    d = \frac{PM}{RT}
    d=PMRTd = \frac{PM}{RT}
  2. Identifica i dati:

    • P = 1 \, \text{atm}P=1 atmP = 1 \, \text{atm}
    • M = 32 \, \text{g/mol}M=32 g/molM = 32 \, \text{g/mol}
    • R = 0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)}R=0.0821 L*atm/(K*mol)R = 0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)}
    • T = 273 \, \text{K}T=273 KT = 273 \, \text{K}
  3. Calcola la densità:

    d = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(32 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})}
    d=(1 atm)(32 g/mol)(0.0821 L*atm/(K*mol))(273 K)d = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(32 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})}
  4. Esegui il calcolo:

    d \approx \frac{32}{22.414} \approx 1.43 \, \text{g/L}
    d≈3222.414≈1.43 g/Ld \approx \frac{32}{22.414} \approx 1.43 \, \text{g/L}

    d = \frac{PM}{RT}
    d=PMRTd = \frac{PM}{RT}
  2. Per il gas A:

    d_A = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(28 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})} \approx \frac{28}{22.414} \approx 1.25 \, \text{g/L}
    dA=(1 atm)(28 g/mol)(0.0821 L*atm/(K*mol))(273 K)≈2822.414≈1.25 g/Ld_A = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(28 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})} \approx \frac{28}{22.414} \approx 1.25 \, \text{g/L}
  3. Per il gas B:

    d_B = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(44 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})} \approx \frac{44}{22.414} \approx 1.96 \, \text{g/L}
    dB=(1 atm)(44 g/mol)(0.0821 L*atm/(K*mol))(273 K)≈4422.414≈1.96 g/Ld_B = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(44 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})} \approx \frac{44}{22.414} \approx 1.96 \, \text{g/L}

Soluzione:

  1. Identifica i dati:

    • m = 10 \, \text{g}m=10 gm = 10 \, \text{g}
    • V = 5 \, \text{L}V=5 LV = 5 \, \text{L}
  2. Applica la formula della densità:

    d = \frac{m}{V} = \frac{10 \, \text{g}}{5 \, \text{L}} = 2 \, \text{g/L}
    d=mV=10 g5 L=2 g/Ld = \frac{m}{V} = \frac{10 \, \text{g}}{5 \, \text{L}} = 2 \, \text{g/L}

Gas Density Exercises

The density of a gas is defined as the mass per unit volume. It can be calculated using the following formula:

d = \frac{m}{V}
d=mVd = \frac{m}{V}

where:

  • ddd = density (g/L)
  • mmm = mass (g)
  • VVV = volume (L)

In standard conditions (0 °C and 1 atm), the density of a gas can also be calculated using the ideal gas law:

PV = nRT
PV=nRTPV = nRT

where:

  • PPP = pressure (atm)
  • VVV = volume (L)
  • nnn = number of moles
  • RRR = gas constant (0.0821 L atm/(K mol))
  • TTT = temperature (K)

Exercise 1: Calculating the Density of a Gas

Problem: Calculate the density of a gas that has a mass of 2 g and occupies a volume of 1 L.

Solution:

  1. Identify the given:
  • m = 2 \, \text{g}m=2 gm = 2 \, \text{g}
  • V = 1 \, \text{L}V=1 LV = 1 \, \text{L}
  1. Apply the density formula:
d = \frac{m}{V} = \frac{2 \, \text{g}}{1 \, \text{L}} = 2 \, \text{g/L}
d=mV=2 g1 L=2 g/Ld = \frac{m}{V} = \frac{2 \, \text{g}}{1 \, \text{L}} = 2 \, \text{g/L}

So, the density of the gas is 2 g/L.

Exercise 2: Density of an Ideal Gas

Problem: Calculate the density of an ideal gas at 1 atm and 0 °C (273 K) with a molar mass of 32 g/mol.

Solution:

  1. Use the ideal gas density formula:
d = \frac{PM}{RT}
d=PMRTd = \frac{PM}{RT}
  1. Identify the data:
  • P = 1 \, \text{atm}P=1 atmP = 1 \, \text{atm}
  • M = 32 \, \text{g/mol}M=32 g/molM = 32 \, \text{g/mol}
  • R = 0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)}R=0.0821 L*atm/(K*mol)R = 0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)}
  • T = 273 \, \text{K}T=273 KT = 273 \, \text{K}
  1. Calculate the density:
d = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(32 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})}
d=(1 atm)(32 g/mol)(0.0821 L*atm/(K*mol))(273 K)d = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(32 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})}
  1. Perform the calculation:
d \approx \frac{32}{22.414} \approx 1.43 \, \text{g/L}
d≈3222.414≈1.43 g/Ld \approx \frac{32}{22.414} \approx 1.43 \, \text{g/L}

So, the density of the ideal gas is 1.43 g/L.

Exercise 3: Density Comparison

Problem: Two gases, A and B, have molar masses of 28 g/mol and 44 g/mol, respectively. If both gases are at 1 atm and 0 °C, which gas has a greater density?

Solution:

  1. Calculate the density of each gas using the formula:
d = \frac{PM}{RT}
d=PMRTd = \frac{PM}{RT}
  1. For gas A:
d_A = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(28 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})} \approx \frac{28}{22.414} \approx 1.25 \, \text{g/L}
dA=(1 atm)(28 g/mol)(0.0821 L*atm/(K*mol))(273 K)≈2822.414≈1.25 g/Ld_A = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(28 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})} \approx \frac{28}{22.414} \approx 1.25 \, \text{g/L}
  1. For gas B:
d_B = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(44 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})} \approx \frac{44}{22.414} \approx 1.96 \, \text{g/L}
dB=(1 atm)(44 g/mol)(0.0821 L*atm/(K*mol))(273 K)≈4422.414≈1.96 g/Ld_B = \frac{(1 \, \text{atm})(44 \, \text{g/mol})}{(0.0821 \, \text{L*atm/(K*mol)})(273 \, \text{K})} \approx \frac{44}{22.414} \approx 1.96 \, \text{g/L}
  1. Comparison of densities:
  • Density of A: 1.25 g/L
  • Density of B: 1.96 g/L

So, gas B has a higher density than gas A.

Exercise 4: Density and Volume

Problem: A gas occupies a volume of 5 L and has a mass of 10 g. What is the density of the gas and how does it compare to a gas that has a density of 1.5 g/L?

Solution:

  1. Identify the data:
  • m = 10 \, \text{g}m=10 gm = 10 \, \text{g}
  • V = 5 \, \text{L}V=5 LV = 5 \, \text{L}
  1. Apply the density formula:
d = \frac{m}{V} = \frac{10 \, \text{g}}{5 \, \text{L}} = 2 \, \text{g/L}
d=mV=10 g5 L=2 g/Ld = \frac{m}{V} = \frac{10 \, \text{g}}{5 \, \text{L}} = 2 \, \text{g/L}
  1. Compare with the density of the reference gas:
  • Density of the calculated gas: 2 g/L
  • Density of the reference gas: 1.5 g/L

Since 2 g/L is greater than 1.5 g/L, the gas in question is denser than the reference gas.
