\mathbf{v} = (v_1, v_2, v_3)
v=(v1,v2,v3)\mathbf{v} = (v_1, v_2, v_3)
k \mathbf{v} = (k v_1, k v_2, k v_3)
kv=(kv1,kv2,kv3)k \mathbf{v} = (k v_1, k v_2, k v_3)

Dove:

  • v è il vettore originale,
  • k è lo scalare.

Proprietà del Prodotto Vettoriale per uno Scalare

  1. Associatività: k(m \mathbf{v}) = (km) \mathbf{v}k(mv)=(km)vk(m \mathbf{v}) = (km) \mathbf{v}
  2. Distributività: k(\mathbf{u} + \mathbf{v}) = k\mathbf{u} + k\mathbf{v}k(u+v)=ku+kvk(\mathbf{u} + \mathbf{v}) = k\mathbf{u} + k\mathbf{v}
  3. Identità: 1 \cdot \mathbf{v} = \mathbf{v}1⋅v=v1 \cdot \mathbf{v} = \mathbf{v}

Exercises on the product of a vector and a scalar

Theory of the Product of a Vector by a Scalar

The product of a vector by a scalar (or real number) is an algebraic operation that changes the length (or magnitude) of the vector without changing its direction, unless the scalar is negative, in which case the vector is inverted.

Definition

If we have a vector v and a scalar k, the product is defined as:

\mathbf{v} = (v_1, v_2, v_3)
v=(v1,v2,v3)\mathbf{v} = (v_1, v_2, v_3)
k \mathbf{v} = (k v_1, k v_2, k v_3)
kv=(kv1,kv2,kv3)k \mathbf{v} = (k v_1, k v_2, k v_3)

Where:

  • v is the original vector,
  • k is the scalar.

Properties of the Vector Product for a Scalar

  1. Associativity: k(m \mathbf{v}) = (km) \mathbf{v}k(mv)=(km)vk(m \mathbf{v}) = (km) \mathbf{v}
  2. Distributivity: k(\mathbf{u} + \mathbf{v}) = k\mathbf{u} + k\mathbf{v}k(u+v)=ku+kvk(\mathbf{u} + \mathbf{v}) = k\mathbf{u} + k\mathbf{v}
  3. Identity: 1 \cdot \mathbf{v} = \mathbf{v}1⋅v=v1 \cdot \mathbf{v} = \mathbf{v}

Exercises on the Product of a Vector for a Scalar

Exercise 1: Product of a Vector for a Positive Scalar

Calculate the product of the vector:

\mathbf{a} = (2, -3, 4)
a=(2,−3,4)\mathbf{a} = (2, -3, 4)

for the scalar:

k = 3.
k=3.k = 3.

Solution:

We use the definition of the product of a vector for a scalar:

k \mathbf{a} = 3(2, -3, 4) = (3 \cdot 2, 3 \cdot (-3), 3 \cdot 4).
ka=3(2,−3,4)=(3⋅2,3⋅(−3),3⋅4).k \mathbf{a} = 3(2, -3, 4) = (3 \cdot 2, 3 \cdot (-3), 3 \cdot 4).

Let’s calculate the individual terms:

= (6, -9, 12).
=(6,−9,12).= (6, -9, 12).

Result:

The product of the vector \mathbf{a}a\mathbf{a} and the scalar kkk is (6, -9, 12)(6,−9,12)(6, -9, 12).

Exercise 2: Product of a Vector and a Negative Scalar

Calculate the product of the vector:

\mathbf{b} = (-1, 5, 2)
b=(−1,5,2)\mathbf{b} = (-1, 5, 2)

for the scalar:

k = -4.
k=−4.k = -4.

Process:

We use the definition of the product of a vector and a scalar:

k \mathbf{b} = -4(-1, 5, 2) = (-4 \cdot (-1), -4 \cdot 5, -4 \cdot 2).
kb=−4(−1,5,2)=(−4⋅(−1),−4⋅5,−4⋅2).k \mathbf{b} = -4(-1, 5, 2) = (-4 \cdot (-1), -4 \cdot 5, -4 \cdot 2).

We calculate the individual terms:

= (4, -20, -8).
=(4,−20,−8).= (4, -20, -8).

Result:

The product of the vector \mathbf{b}b\mathbf{b} and the scalar kkk is (4, -20, -8)(4,−20,−8)(4, -20, -8).

Exercise 3: Product of a Vector and a Sum of Scalars

Calculate the product of the vector:

\mathbf{c} = (0, 7, -3)
c=(0,7,−3)\mathbf{c} = (0, 7, -3)

for the sum of the scalars:

k_1 = 2 \quad and \quad k_2 = 5.
k1=2andk2=5.k_1 = 2 \quad and \quad k_2 = 5.

Procedure:

First we calculate the sum of the scalars:

k = k_1 + k_2 = 2 + 5 = 7.
k=k1+k2=2+5=7.k = k_1 + k_2 = 2 + 5 = 7.

Now we calculate the product of the vector and the sum:

k \mathbf{c} = 7(0, 7, -3) = (7 \cdot 0, 7 \cdot 7, 7 \cdot (-3)).
kc=7(0,7,−3)=(7⋅0,7⋅7,7⋅(−3)).k \mathbf{c} = 7(0, 7, -3) = (7 \cdot 0, 7 \cdot 7, 7 \cdot (-3)).

Let’s calculate the individual terms:

= (0, 49, -21).
=(0,49,−21).= (0, 49, -21).

Result:

The product of the vector \mathbf{c}c\mathbf{c} and the sum of the scalars is (0, 49, -21)(0,49,−21)(0, 49, -21).

Exercise 4: Product of a Vector and a Scalar and Sum of Vectors

Calculate the product of the vector:

\mathbf{d} = (1, -1, 2)
d=(1,−1,2)\mathbf{d} = (1, -1, 2)

for the scalar:

k = -2.
k=−2.k = -2.

Then calculate the sum with the vector:

\mathbf{e} = (3, 4, -5).
e=(3,4,−5).\mathbf{e} = (3, 4, -5).

Procedure:

First we calculate the product:

k \mathbf{d} = -2(1, -1, 2) = (-2 \cdot 1, -2 \cdot (-1), -2 \cdot 2).
kd=−2(1,−1,2)=(−2⋅1,−2⋅(−1),−2⋅2).k \mathbf{d} = -2(1, -1, 2) = (-2 \cdot 1, -2 \cdot (-1), -2 \cdot 2).

Let’s calculate the individual terms:

= (-2, 2, -4).
=(−2,2,−4).= (-2, 2, -4).

Now let’s add this result with the vector e:

(-2, 2, -4) + (3, 4, -5) = (-2 + 3,\; 2 + 4,\; -4 + (-5)).
(−2,2,−4)+(3,4,−5)=(−2+3,  2+4,  −4+(−5)).(-2, 2, -4) + (3, 4, -5) = (-2 + 3,\; 2 + 4,\; -4 + (-5)).

Let’s calculate the individual terms of the sum:

= (1,\;6,\;-9).
=(1,  6,  −9).= (1,\;6,\;-9).

Result:

The final result of the sum is (1,\;6,\;-9)(1,  6,  −9)(1,\;6,\;-9).
