Concetti Chiave

1. Transistor Bipolare (BJT)

  • Guadagno di Corrente: \beta = \frac{I_C}{I_B}β=ICIB\beta = \frac{I_C}{I_B}

  • Corrente di Drain: I_D = k \left( (V_{GS} - V_{th}) V_{DS} - \frac{V_{DS}^2}{2} \right)ID=k((VGS−Vth)VDS−VDS22)I_D = k \left( (V_{GS} - V_{th}) V_{DS} - \frac{V_{DS}^2}{2} \right)

dove:

  • kkk è un parametro del dispositivo,
  • V_{GS}VGSV_{GS} è la tensione gate-source,
  • V_{th}VthV_{th} è la tensione di soglia,
  • V_{DS}VDSV_{DS} è la tensione drain-source.

I_D = k \left( (V_{GS} - V_{th}) V_{DS} - \frac{V_{DS}^2}{2} \right)ID=k((VGS−Vth)VDS−VDS22)I_D = k \left( (V_{GS} - V_{th}) V_{DS} - \frac{V_{DS}^2}{2} \right)

Sostituendo i valori:

I_D = 0.5 \left( (5 - 2) \cdot 3 - \frac{3^2}{2} \right)ID=0.5((5−2)⋅3−322)I_D = 0.5 \left( (5 - 2) \cdot 3 - \frac{3^2}{2} \right)

I_D = 0.5 \left( 3 \cdot 3 - 4.5 \right) = 0.5 \left( 9 - 4.5 \right) = 0.5 \cdot 4.5 = 2.25 \, \text{mA}ID=0.5(3⋅3−4.5)=0.5(9−4.5)=0.5⋅4.5=2.25 mAI_D = 0.5 \left( 3 \cdot 3 - 4.5 \right) = 0.5 \left( 9 - 4.5 \right) = 0.5 \cdot 4.5 = 2.25 \, \text{mA}

Key Concepts

1. Bipolar Transistor (BJT)

A bipolar transistor (BJT) is a three-terminal device that can be used as an amplifier or a switch. The terminals are:

  • Emitter (E): emits charge carriers.
  • Base (B): controls the flow of current.
  • Collector (C): collects the charge carriers.

The current flowing through the transistor is described by the following relations:

  • Emitter Current: I_E = I_B + I_CIE=IB+ICI_E = I_B + I_C
  • Current Gain: \beta = \frac{I_C}{I_B}β=ICIB\beta = \frac{I_C}{I_B}

2. Field Effect Transistor (FET)

A field effect transistor (FET) is a three-terminal device that uses an electric field to control the flow of current. The terminals are:

  • Source (S): source of charge carriers.
  • Gate (G): controls the current flow.
  • Drain (D): collects the charge carriers.

The current flowing through a FET is described by the following equation:

  • Drain Current: I_D = k \left( (V_{GS} - V_{th}) V_{DS} - \frac{V_{DS}^2}{2} \right)ID=k((VGS−Vth)VDS−VDS22)I_D = k \left( (V_{GS} - V_{th}) V_{DS} - \frac{V_{DS}^2}{2} \right)

where:

  • kkk is a device parameter,
  • V_{GS}VGSV_{GS} is the gate-source voltage,
  • V_{th}VthV_{th} is the threshold voltage,
  • V_{DS}VDSV_{DS} is the drain-source voltage.

A BJT has a base current I_B = 10 \, \text{mA}IB=10 mAI_B = 10 \, \text{mA} and a current gain \beta = 100β=100\beta = 100.

  1. Calculate the collector current I_CICI_C.
  2. Calculate the emitter current I_EIEI_E.

Solution:

  1. I_C = \beta \cdot I_B = 100 \cdot 10 \, \text{mA} = 1 \, \text{A}IC=β⋅IB=100⋅10 mA=1 AI_C = \beta \cdot I_B = 100 \cdot 10 \, \text{mA} = 1 \, \text{A}
  2. I_E = I_B + I_C = 10 \, \text{mA} + 1 \, \text{A} = 1.01 \, \text{A}IE=IB+IC=10 mA+1 A=1.01 AI_E = I_B + I_C = 10 \, \text{mA} + 1 \, \text{A} = 1.01 \, \text{A}

Exercise 2: Calculating the Current in a FET

A FET has a gate-source voltage V_{GS} = 5 \, \text{V}VGS=5 VV_{GS} = 5 \, \text{V}, a threshold voltage V_{th} = 2 \, \text{V}Vth=2 VV_{th} = 2 \, \text{V} and a device parameter k = 0.5 \, \text{mA/V}^2k=0.5 mA/V2k = 0.5 \, \text{mA/V}^2.

  1. Calculate the drain current I_DIDI_D for a drain-source voltage V_{DS} = 3 \, \text{V}VDS=3 VV_{DS} = 3 \, \text{V}.

Solution:
I_D = k \left( (V_{GS} - V_{th}) V_{DS} - \frac{V_{DS}^2}{2} \right)ID=k((VGS−Vth)VDS−VDS22)I_D = k \left( (V_{GS} - V_{th}) V_{DS} - \frac{V_{DS}^2}{2} \right)
Substituting the values:
I_D = 0.5 \left( (5 - 2) \cdot 3 - \frac{3^2}{2} \right)ID=0.5((5−2)⋅3−322)I_D = 0.5 \left( (5 - 2) \cdot 3 - \frac{3^2}{2} \right) I_D = 0.5 \left( 3 \cdot 3 - 4.5 \right) = 0 .5 \left( 9 - 4.5 \right) = 0.5 \cdot 4.5 = 2.25 \, \text{mA}ID=0.5(3⋅3−4.5)=0.5(9−4.5)=0.5⋅4.5=2.25 mAI_D = 0.5 \left( 3 \cdot 3 - 4.5 \right) = 0 .5 \left( 9 - 4.5 \right) = 0.5 \cdot 4.5 = 2.25 \, \text{mA}
