\lim_{x \to a} f(x)
Tipi di Limiti
-
\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = L
-
Limiti Infiniti: Quando f(x) cresce senza limiti mentre x si avvicina a a:
\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = \infty
-
\lim_{x \to a^-} f(x) \quad \text{e} \quad \lim_{x \to a^+} f(x)
-
Sostituzione Diretta:
f(1) = \frac{1^2 - 1}{1 - 1} = \frac{0}{0} \quad \text{(indeterminato)}
-
Fattorizzazione:
Fattorizziamo il numeratore:f(x) = \frac{(x - 1)(x + 1)}{x - 1}
Per x \neq 1, possiamo semplificare:
f(x) = x + 1
-
Calcolo del Limite:
Ora calcoliamo il limite:\lim_{x \to 1} f(x) = \lim_{x \to 1} (x + 1) = 1 + 1 = 2

Calculating a Limit
The limit is a fundamental concept in mathematical analysis that describes the behavior of a function when the independent variable approaches a certain value. Limits are used to define continuity, differentiation, and integration.
Limit Notation
The limit of a function f(x) as x approaches a value a is written as:
\lim_{x \to a} f(x)
Types of Limits
- Finite Limits: When f(x) approaches a finite number L as x approaches a:
\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = L
- Infinite Limits: When f(x) grows without bound as x approaches a:
\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = \infty
- Lateral Limits: Limits can also be computed from the left (a^-) and from the right (a^+):
\lim_{x \to a^-} f(x) \quad \text{e} \quad \lim_{x \to a^+} f(x)
Example of Calculating a Limit
Let's consider the limit of the function f(x) = \frac{x^2 - 1}{x - 1} when x approaches 1.
- Direct Substitution:
f(1) = \frac{1^2 - 1}{1 - 1} = \frac{0}{0} \quad \text{(indeterminate)}
- Factorization:
Let's factor the numerator:
f(x) = \frac{(x - 1)(x + 1)}{x - 1}
For x \neq 1, we can simplify:
f(x) = x + 1
- Calculating the Limit:
Now let's calculate the limit:
\lim_{x \to 1} f(x) = \lim_{x \to 1} (x + 1) = 1 + 1 = 2
So, the limit of f(x) as x approaches 1 is 2.
